The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Critical Lack of Weight-Loss Medications

Fewer than one in 10 people eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural recommendations on the medications.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on estimates, more than two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to universal access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, says the agency.

Despite the present most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The recommendation encourages countries and companies to increase access, through measures including voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.
