Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
