The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
