Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, fiends, and sinister influences increasing in influence within the urban setting.
Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.
The Soldiers Table Introduced
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.
This warrior group features Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
Why Split the Party?
Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be impossible.
This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.
Characteristics of the Soldiers Table
According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are rare.
Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the warrior group.
Motivations for Departure
To begin with, the party knows exactly where to go next after a violent first encounter with The Crow Keepers.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, striking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.
Casimir then settled his debts and fled to a secure base in the remote area, above the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.
Character Drivers
Additionally, each character has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:
- Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
- Kattigan has experience in the region and advises that it is a hostile location.
- The strong character and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead freed him, have no other options.
- However, their position as important members in House Halovar could enable the party enter locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.
Fugitives
Finally, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:
- Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
- The warrior and The healer defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
- Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.
This means them few options but to journey toward the remote area in quest for Casimir.
What’s Next?
Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Seekers and Planners parties.
Fans can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
